...recent television stars super08 produce an epic, dense sound that
belies the fact that there are only four people on stage. Although named after a soundless camera, the band evoke a similarly hazy and nostalgic feeling, astutely combining the psychedelic wall-of-sounds
outputted by Stone Roses and Ride, yet with enough vigour and Verve to escape being purely derivative.
With the closing track recalling BRMC’s evocative ‘Rifles’ and forcing the notoriously fickle Louis audience into deafening cries for an encore (this for a support band, remember), it appears that super08 are set to join the ranks of Hustler and Gonga within the ranks of Bristol's burgeoning stoner-rock scene.
The first few numbers were a bit ropey thanks, I think, to the lead being pissed out of his skull, but once he got his momentum up there was no stopping him as, backed by a wonderfully tight unit, he morphed from out of time and out of tune Shaun Ryder to a captivating, corruscating and distinctly un-camp Michael Stipe.
The band has a clear musical heritage running through the Verve and ‘The Second Coming’ era Stones Roses to ‘Fables of the Reconstruction’ REM, building up vocal landscapes underpinned by moving but nonetheless rocking instrumental parts. If they can hit their peak from the first number they‘ll be hitting 5 stars in no time at all.
Tight as a nun’s twat, these boys counjure a tidy package of funkngroove that gets butts awigglin. Bonus feature = Kick-ass bass player who puts the n in RocknRoll.
